Exciting Change in Leadership at Laidlaw Schools Trust

Since 2023, we have successfully operated with a co-CEO model, with Rob Hughes leading Finance and Operations, and Sally Newton leading School Improvement. This approach was introduced to drive significant change and support our rapid growth across the Trust, and it has been instrumental in our success.

By leveraging the contrasting skill sets of both leaders, we have been able to guide the Trust through a period of rapid evolution with agility and clarity. Together, we have grown the Trust by 26%, strengthened our infrastructure, and implemented School Improvement teams and systems that are already delivering real, positive outcomes for our pupils. As a result, LST is now being recognised as a leader in education and a powerful force for good in the North East.

With the improvement journey well underway and a strong Central Team now in place, Rob and Sally, in collaboration with the Board of Trustees, have agreed that the time is right for the Trust to transition to being led by a single CEO, as originally planned. After the Easter break, Sally will step into the role of sole CEO. This change will allow for the integration of educational and operational priorities, financial efficiency, and staff wellbeing and development into one cohesive role.

The Board of Trustees would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Rob for his invaluable contributions and leadership, and they are thrilled to announce that Sally will be stepping up into this expanded role. The Board is confident that Sally’s leadership will accelerate progress, foster stronger collaboration between the academies and the central team, and drive performance, ensuring we continue to provide the extraordinary education our pupils need and deserve.
