How To Apply
To apply for Initial Teacher Training with Laidlaw Teacher Training, please use the DfE Apply for Teacher Training service.
Follow these steps to make sure your initial teacher training application process goes smoothly:
1. Choose a Course and Check Entry Criteria
Before applying, make sure you meet the requirements for your chosen phase and subject.
Entry Requirements

Primary or Secondary: UK bachelor’s degree (or equivalent).

Secondary: Strong subject knowledge demonstrated by:

A degree in the subject

An A level in the subject
-
A related degree (e.g., engineering for physics teaching)
-
An unrelated degree with relevant professional experience

Primary: You can apply with a subject specialism (e.g., Primary with Maths). Some secondary courses allow two subjects (e.g., Maths with Physics).

Overseas Qualifications: Obtain a Statement of Comparability from UK ENIC.

Other Requirements
All offers are conditional on:

Satisfactory medical report (Fitness to Teach)

Enhanced DBS check

Proof of identity and qualifications

2. Apply via the DfE Teacher Training Service
All applications must be submitted through the Department for Education’s Apply for Teacher Training service.

If you’ve left Higher Education within the last five years, one referee must be from your university.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so apply early.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview.

3. Attend an Interview
If shortlisted, you’ll receive full details of your interview.
The interview will explore:

Your motivation to teach

Communication skills and subject knowledge

Relevant experience
It’s also your chance to ask questions about the programme.
Bring documents to verify your identity, qualifications, and support the DBS process.
4. Receive Your Offer
After the interview, we’ll update your application on DfE Apply with the outcome.

Successful candidates will receive a conditional or unconditional offer with next steps outlined.

All offers are subject to medical and DBS clearance. Full guidance for completing your DBS application will be provided.
